Windows Update decides that since the computer was turned off during inactive hours, that as soon as she boots the computer and logs in is the perfect time to download and install updates, which brings the system to a crawl for minutes and often forces a restart. It's not like she booted the computer because she wanted to use it right away. At best it might wait until she takes more than a minute or two to read a page or watch a video to decide the computer is "idle" and start the process. Is there any way to change this behavior so that it will ask her before it starts installing updates, and ideally use the "install updates and shut down" so they get installed when she's done with the computer, instead of when she wants to use it?
In Windows XP, Vista, and 7 I would simply set it to "Notify me of updates, but let me choose when to download and install them. I found a work-around with Group Policy , but she uses Windows 10 Home which doesn't let you use Group Policy. How do I apply that fix with Windows 10 Home? The first 10 searches just regurgitated that above solution from different sources. How do I keep Windows Update from bringing the computer to a crawl when she's trying to use it and instead have it install updates when she's done with the computer? Sorry, but money's tight so upgrading to 10 pro for my mother's computer is not an option. Nor is her upgrading the computer or buying a new one, especially since she just bought one. I just remembered something from either XP Pro or Server There used to be a way to apply an "Administrative Template" made with one of the above to a computer running XP home to implement options that you can normally only access via GPEDIT. I'm pretty sure I still have the template saved on my old XP computer. Would that be possible to prepare something like that on my desktop running Windows 10 Pro and stick it on a flash drive, then used SneakerNet to bring it to mom's computer and implement it?

I only have keys for copies of Sever and from DreamSpark, so I'd have to use a demo or unregistered copy in a virtual machine. Windows 10 is very different.
